How Does the Dentist Whiten Your Teeth?

Dental whitening treatments have come a long way since they were first introduced to the dental world. Many individuals have a difficult time smiling with confidence, simply because their teeth are badly stained. Thankfully, there are now more effective treatments than ever before, allowing individuals to overcome their staining issues and have the beautiful white smiles they have always longed for. With this information, individuals can learn more about their options for teeth whitening treatments.

There are two active ingredients that are used in the whitening process and they are very similar. Carbamide peroxide offers a gentler whitening treatment and is the common ingredient found in at-home dental whitening kits. This peroxide is less irritating to the gum tissue and is most often used for patients who have minor staining. There is also hydrogen peroxide which is a stronger option. This peroxide offers more of a bleaching effect but it can cause irritation to the gums.

When a patient comes to the office to have their teeth whitened, they first go through a cleaning procedure. A gritty paste and brush are used to remove any plaque and tartar so the whitening treatment will have no problem penetrating deep into the dentin area, which is where the stains become trapped in the teeth.

The dentist will first protect the patient’s gums with a dental dam so the whitening treatment does not cause any irritation to these sensitive tissues. A mouth retractor is also used so the cheeks and lips are pulled away from the teeth and do not come into contact with the whitening solution. Once precautions have been taken for protection, the whitening solution will be applied directly to the front of the teeth.

Whitening treatments can last up to an hour, depending on the type. The dentist will check the shade change at intervals to ensure the right results are occurring. Most individuals with pronounced staining will need more than one treatment. Some patients are given at-home protocols to continue their whitening progression.
